tritrichomonas foetus test for cats

Tritrichomonas foetus Test for Cats

£59.95 per test

Tritrichomonas foetus can cause chronic diarrhoea and colitis in cats. The symptoms primarily include loose or watery stools, frequent defecation, and sometimes faecal incontinence. This condition can be particularly persistent and challenging to treat, with affected cats often experiencing recurrent or chronic symptoms. The Tritrichomonas foetus test for cats can detect low levels of the protozoan. It’s important to note that not all infected cats will show signs of illness; some may be asymptomatic carriers, contributing to the spread of the infection. Early detection allows for treatment, and identifying asymptomatic carriers also helps in controlling the spread of the infection within multi-cat households.

The Tritrichomonas foetus test for cats kit includes free 24-hour tracked return postage, ensuring your sample reaches the lab quickly. Further information

Tritrichomonas foetus is a microscopic protozoan parasite that primarily infects the large intestine of cats. Infection is most frequently seen in young cats and kittens, but cats of any age can be affected. Transmission usually occurs through direct contact with infected cats or by ingesting contaminated faeces, making multi-cat environments particularly at risk.

Many cats infected with Tritrichomonas foetus show no obvious symptoms but can still shed the parasite and infect others. The classic sign of tritrichomoniasis is chronic, foul-smelling diarrhoea, often characterised by soft or watery stools containing mucus or blood. This diarrhoea may be persistent or may come and go over several weeks or months. Typically, affected cats remain otherwise bright and active, with little or no fever or lethargy.

Ongoing gastrointestinal upset can lead to weight loss and poor body condition, even though most cats continue to eat normally. Chronic inflammation of the intestinal lining may interfere with nutrient absorption, making it difficult for cats to maintain or gain weight.

This screen is for a dog or cat only. The testing procedure adopted within our lab identifies antigens rather than cysts as this is a far more accurate measure than looking for cysts which have a very short, fragile lifecycle. Statistically, no test can ever be claimed to be 100% accurate however, based on research undertaken by an external board, compared to other brands of antigen tests, blood tests and microscopy methods, the test adopted by Wormcount.com is very accurate (for specificity and sensitivity); which is why we have chosen to adopt this method as our standard practice.

There is a ‘use by date’ on each kit which MUST be adhered to.  The use by date will always be a minimum of 4 weeks from date of order.  Unfortunately, no refunds can be given for late submission or unused tests however please contact the office to discuss options if this occurs.

If undertaking a retest post treatment, we recommend waiting at least 3 weeks before retesting following completion of the course of treatment.  Please consider the timescales and use-by dates when ordering a kit.
