Haemonchus contortus | Barber Pole Worm

£35 per test

Barber Pole Worm is one of the most damaging parasites affecting sheep and goats. It feeds on blood and causes anaemia, poor thrive, bottle jaw and, in severe cases, sudden death. Animals often look normal while worm burdens build. By the time you see signs, production losses may already have occurred.

Routine faecal egg counts (FECs) help monitor worm burdens. However, they only report “strongyle-type” eggs. Barber Pole Worm eggs look identical to other strongyle eggs under the microscope, so microscopy alone cannot confirm whether Haemonchus contortus is present. This means infections can increase without being correctly identified.

Our Barber Pole Worm Test uses sensitive qPCR technology to detect Haemonchus contortus DNA in faecal samples. The test identifies this specific parasite, even at low levels. You receive clear confirmation before clinical signs develop.

Early detection helps you make timely treatment decisions. You can target worming where it is needed instead of dosing the whole group. This approach reduces unnecessary treatments and slows the development of anthelmintic resistance. It also protects performance and supports long-term flock health.

We provide clear, easy to read results so you can act with confidence.

If you suspect anaemia, poor growth or Barber Pole Worm on your holding, this test gives you accurate answers. Take control early and protect your livestock.
