Haemonchus contortus (Barber Pole Worm) qPCR Test

Routine faecal egg counts (FEC) using microscopy can detect Haemonchus contortus eggs, but only as part of the generic “strongyle-type” egg group. Unfortunately, standard microscopy cannot reliably distinguish Barber Pole Worm eggs from other strongyle worms. Definitive identification under the microscope requires either larval cultures (hatching the eggs and identifying larvae) or, more reliably, a molecular method such as qPCR. Barber Pole Worm (Haemonchus contortus) remains one of the biggest threats to sheep, goats, and other grazing livestock causing anaemia, weakness, and sometimes sudden death. Because traditional FECs can miss early or low-level infections, problems often go undetected until health issues are visible.

Our Haemonchus contortus qPCR Test detects tiny amounts of Haemonchus DNA in faecal samples, allowing you to catch infections early and respond quickly.

Why choose our qPCR test?

  • Very sensitive: Detects low-level infections that traditional microscopy might miss.

  • Quick Results: Receive a detailed, easy to understand report fast.

  • Smarter Worming: Identify exactly which animals are infected, so you can treat only when needed and help slow down resistance.

This test has a use by date of at least 6 weeks from point of order and it must be returned to the lab on or any time before the use by date.

Turnaround time: up to 5 working days upon receipt of sample into the lab.
